A Conversation with Medal of Honor Recipient Ryan Pitts

The National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership is proud to share a powerful conversation with Staff Sgt. Ryan Pitts, Medal of Honor recipient and extraordinary example of leadership under fire.

In this special interview, Pitts reflects on the harrowing Battle of Wanat in Afghanistan, where his bravery and resolve helped save lives and hold the line against a fierce and determined enemy. While recounting moments of life-threatening danger, Pitts continually brings the focus back to the people around him — honoring their sacrifices and emphasizing the shared nature of the Medal of Honor.

Despite national recognition and moments in the spotlight — including a recent visit to a Chicago Cubs game with fellow recipient Col. Harvey “Barney” Barnum — Pitts remains grounded and humble. His story illustrates the values we champion: courage, integrity and service.

This conversation is more than a recounting of combat — it’s a lesson in what it means to lead, whether in a foxhole or at the highest levels of command. We encourage you to listen, learn and reflect — and to explore ways to engage with our leadership programs.

Special thanks to the staff, supporters and veterans who helped make this moment possible.

Help us empower the next generation to meet their moment.
