Medal of Honor Values Shine at USC Leadership Panel

Panelists Salvatore A. Giunta, Alfred Poirier, and Natalie Samarjian engage in a discussion on values-based leadership.

The National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership recently hosted a transformative panel discussion, “Inspiring American Leadership,” at the University of Southern California. The event brought together a distinguished lineup of speakers, including one of the nation’s 61 living Medal of Honor recipients, to explore the power of values-based leadership in today’s rapidly changing world.

Moderated by Fox 24 host and executive producer Leyla Gulen, a USC alumna and Los Angeles native, the panel featured three remarkable leaders:

  • Salvatore A. Giunta, Medal of Honor recipient (War on Terrorism – Afghanistan)

  • Natalie Samarjian, President and CEO of Coro Southern California

  • Alfred Poirier, Deputy Chief of the Beverly Hills Fire Department

These leaders shared compelling personal stories and practical insights, highlighting how values such as courage, integrity and service are critical to leading effectively and inspiring others. Drawing from the six core values of the Medal of Honor—courage, integrity, commitment, sacrifice, citizenship and patriotism—the discussion emphasized how character-driven leadership can shape individuals, communities and entire organizations.

“We were honored to host this conversation with some of today’s most inspiring leaders,” said Tom Mundell, President and CEO of the National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership. “Events like this bring our mission to life. By connecting Medal of Honor values with real-world leadership challenges, our hope is to help people across all walks of life lead with character, courage and purpose.”

The event concluded with a networking reception, offering attendees the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers and explore how they can apply these principles in their own leadership journeys.

Building a National Conversation on Leadership

The USC panel is part of The Center for Leadership’s larger mission to inspire leadership through the lens of Medal of Honor values. The organization is poised to expand its reach with a comprehensive series of nationwide trainings and events, both virtual and in-person, designed to teach leadership skills and create spaces for dialogue with Medal of Honor recipients.

Initiatives include leadership workshops, community events and educational programs that bridge the gap between theory and practice, reinforcing the belief that character-driven leadership is not only teachable but essential. According to the Center’s strategic plan, these programs are set to scale nationwide, with an emphasis on accessibility and community impact.
